Since announcing the CARDIO Simulator heart replica project in December 2018, crossEffect, Inc. (Fushimi Ward, Kyoto) has continued to develop new biomedical engineering solutions in cooperation with the National Cerebal CardioVascular Center (NCVC, Suita City, Osaka). Recently, crossEffect partnered with Screen Holdings Co., Ltd. (Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto) and Kyoeisha Co., Ltd. (Chuo Ward, Osaka) to fully implement the Cardio Structuring System.

The Cardio Structural System applies precision UV-equipped inkjet printer technology to produce a wet-type heart model made from ultra-soft material. The system is able to achieve a sense of realism never seen before. With extremely complex three-dimensional structuring, the model can help improve the surgical skills of new doctors. It is also suitable for practicing surgeries for newborn babies and infants (known for having widely varying attributes) with congenital heart diseases.

While we have developed healthy heart models and a variety of other model types, this particular run reproduces four congenital heart defects. We will subsequently release a healthy heart model and other model types.

Cardio Structuring System Overview for Ultra-Soft Wet Precision Wet Model

System Overview

The Cardio Structuring System allows for direct mass production of 3D models that bear an almost exact resemblance to the actual heart. Based on partner company Screen's unique image processing and direct drawing technology, we were able to develop a 3D structuring apparatus using a precision inkjet printer that can produce 3D heart models in as little as two days. In addition, since ink has a wide effect on the quality of the 3D model, we partnered with chemical manufacturing company Kyoueisha ( who is skilled in working with monomers and oligomers) to develop a new ink that bears an extremely close resemblance to the heart. The 3D heart model achieves an even more realistic, highly accurate quality.
